Face jewels, gems and stickers for your face
What are face jewels?
Face jewels are self-adhesive stones and designs you stick on your skin instead of drawing them on. Peel the backing off, press them onto clean, dry skin and you're done. No glue, no drying time, no skills needed. You'll also see them called face gems, and they turn up mostly at festivals, at carnival, at Halloween and during Pride.
Face jewels, speckles or tattoos: what's the difference?
Roughly three kinds, and the difference is mainly in how you apply them.
- Face jewels and gems are single stones or complete designs with a self-adhesive back. Stick, press, done. Plenty of them can be reused with a little lash glue, mastix or glitter fix gel.
- Speckles and patches work with press, pat, peel: lay the patch sticky side down on your skin, dab it with a damp cloth for about sixty seconds and then peel the film away. The design stays behind on your skin.
- Temporary tattoos and glitter freckles go on the same way and give you freckles, hearts or little flowers with a shimmer effect.
How long do face jewels last?
That depends on the type. A self-adhesive gem lasts an evening and peels straight off afterwards without leaving anything on your skin. The patches and speckles are waterproof and sweatproof and stay put for 24 to 72 hours, so they'll survive a long festival day. Want extra certainty? Lock them in with a setting spray.
Where do you put them?
Anywhere your skin is clean and dry, and that's a lot more than just your face.
- Around the corner of your eye or above your brow, as an eye design.
- On your cheekbone or across the bridge of your nose, if you want to keep it subtle.
- On your forehead and into your hairline, for a proper festival look.
- On your décolletage, shoulders and stomach: the jewelry patches lay a gold chain on your skin, with no piercing and no clasp.
Face jewels for festival, carnival and Halloween
For a festival or Pride, reach for the colourful speckles, eye wings and glitter freckles, in gold, silver, red, pink or multicolour. At carnival you combine them with your costume, and for Halloween there are the spooky Moon Terror designs such as Sugar Skull, Day of the Dead and Freak Show. After something subtle for a night out or a wedding instead? One single gem on your cheekbone is plenty.
Pair your jewels with glitter and face paint
Face jewels look best on top of a finished look. If you're working with face paint and body paint, stick the jewels over it as soon as the paint is dry. A layer of glitter around them finishes the job, and glitter gel holds loose glitter in place without your design running. Going for a completely different face? Have a look at SFX makeup for fake blood, latex and wax.
How do you get face jewels off again?
Peel self-adhesive gems off gently, working from the outside in. If they're really stuck, soften them with a little oil instead of pulling. Patches, speckles and tattoos come off with an oil-based cleanser. Finish with a nourishing cream afterwards, especially around your eyes.
Are face jewels safe for your skin?
Everything on this page is cruelty free, and a large part is vegan, fragrance free, paraben free and sulfate free on top of that. Each product shows exactly which claims apply, and you can filter for them on the left. Apply them to clean skin with no oil or leftover make-up, and they'll hold best and irritate least.
