Acrylic Gel

Acrylic gel is a hybrid of acrylic and gel that lets you strengthen, build up or slightly extend your natural nails. It is stronger and thicker than regular gel polish, but you cure it the same way under a UV or LED lamp: no monomer, no sharp smell, no rush. The acrylic gels on this page are liquid acrylic gels of 13 to 15 ml: they come in a bottle with a brush and level themselves.

Acrylic gel at Boozyshop: strong nails from a bottle

What is acrylic gel?

Acrylic gel combines the strength of acrylic with the ease of gel. The formula is largely acrylate copolymer, topped up with base components for flexibility and adhesion. That way the layer absorbs impact instead of cracking, and grows out neatly with your nail. You need no monomer and no slip solution: apply, let it level, cure.

You will come across acrylic gel under several names. Brands write it as acrygel, poly acrylic gel or polyacryl gel. It is the same type of product; only the spelling differs per brand.

Liquid acrylic gel or acrylic gel from a tube

There are two kinds of acrylic gel, and that difference decides how you work.

Acrylic gel from a tube

As thick as chewing gum. You squeeze out a ball, pick it up with a spatula and shape it with a damp brush, often on a dual form. Plenty of control over the shape, but it takes practice.

Liquid acrylic gel from a bottle

Thinner and self-levelling, applied with the brush from the bottle. No streaks, no spatula, no slip solution. You build an apex layer by layer, curing in between. This is what you will find in this collection: easier at home, and a logical step if you are coming from gel polish.

Acrylic gel, BIAB or builder gel: which one?

All three strengthen your nail, but they differ in thickness, handling and what they are good at.

TypePackagingStrengthBest for
Acrylic gelbottle with brushstrongnails that split easily, a clear apex, a short extension
BIABbottle with brushflexiblestrengthening healthy nails with a thin, natural layer
Builder gel potpot with spatulastrongestreal extensions on tips or dual forms

Still not sure? All three sit together in builder gels.

How do you apply acrylic gel?

  1. Push back your cuticles, file your nail into shape and matte the surface with a buffer.
  2. Degrease the nail plate with a cleanser or primer.
  3. Apply a thin layer of rubber base and cure.
  4. Place a drop of acrylic gel a few millimetres away from your cuticle and draw it towards the free edge with the brush. Wait a few seconds so the gel can level.
  5. Cure: 60 to 90 seconds under LED, 2 to 3 minutes under UV.
  6. Repeat for a thicker apex. Keep the layer around 0.5 mm at the free edge and 1 mm at the highest point.
  7. Wipe off the tacky layer with cleanser and finish with a top coat or a colour of your choice.

Work in thin layers and keep the gel off your cuticle. That prevents lifting and irritation.

How do you remove acrylic gel?

Acrylic gel soaks off less easily than gel polish, so you file away most of it.

  1. File off the shiny top layer with a file or nail drill.
  2. File the layer back until only a thin remainder is left.
  3. Place a cotton pad with remover on the rest, wrap your nail in foil and leave it for 15 minutes.
  4. Push the softened residue away with a cuticle stick and care for your nails with cuticle oil.

Never pull or pry a layer off: a layer of your natural nail comes with it.

Acrylic gel and acrylates

Acrylic gel is built from acrylates, and that is where the strength comes from. If you are sensitive to acrylates or your cuticles get irritated easily, read the ingredient list on the product page and keep the product off your skin. Products without HEMA are in the HEMA-free gel polish collection.

Frequently asked questions about acrylic gel

How long does acrylic gel last?

With good preparation acrylic gel lasts three to four weeks. After that your nail has grown out far enough that a refill is nicer than waiting.

Can you put gel polish over acrylic gel?

Yes. Acrylic gel works as a building layer; you simply paint gel polish over it and finish with a top coat.

Do you need a lamp for acrylic gel?

Yes, acrylic gel only cures under a UV or LED lamp. It does not dry in the air.

Can you extend your nails with liquid acrylic gel?

A short extension, yes, ideally combined with nail tips. If you want serious length, choose builder gel from a pot.

Is acrylic gel bad for your nails?

Not if you apply and remove it properly. Damage almost always comes from pulling it off or filing too aggressively, not from the product itself.
