What is a tinted lip balm?
A regular lip balm cares for your lips and protects them, and that is it. A tinted lip balm does the same, but also leaves behind a sheer layer of colour. Tinted lip balm, lip gloss or lipstick?
The lip products sit close together. This is the difference:
- Tinted lip balm gives light colour and plenty of care, with a soft finish and no hard edges.
- Lip gloss is all about shine and volume, and often feels stickier.
- Lipstick gives full coverage and lasts the longest.
- Lip tint locks colour onto your lips, but cares for them less.
- Lip oil is oily and glossy, usually with even less colour.
Which colour should you pick?
Because the coverage is light, you rarely go wrong with a tinted lip balm. A nude or beige shade gives your lips a bit more definition without anyone noticing. Pink and peach create a fresh, put together look that works on almost every undertone. Brown and toffee are the shades you see everywhere right now, and they make your look feel instantly more grown up. Want to really be seen? Go for a red or berry balm: those leave more colour than you expect from a balm.
Jelly, glossy or matte finish
The finish decides how your lips look once the balm is on. A jelly balm is sheer and slightly bouncy, which makes your lips look fuller. Glossy balms give that wet, glazed look everyone is after. How do you apply it?
Apply your tinted lip balm straight from the stick or tube onto clean lips, then blend outwards with your finger for a softer edge. Two layers give you a little more colour right away. If your lips are dry or flaky, start with a lip scrub so the colour sits evenly. And because the colour stays light, you can happily wear it over a lip liner.
