Makeup powder: keep your look in place all day

What exactly does makeup powder do?

Powder soaks up excess sebum, so your skin gets shiny less quickly. At the same time, it sets the liquid and cream products underneath, so your foundation doesn't creep into your laughter lines and your concealer stays put under your eyes. Many powders also have a soft-focus effect: they diffuse light, so pores and imperfections are visually blurred. Not wearing foundation? A light powder on its own already gives you an even, polished look.

What types of makeup powder are there?

• Translucent powder: a colourless powder that sets your makeup without changing the shade of your foundation. Suitable for every skin tone.
• Loose powder: finely milled loose powder for a light, even finish. Ideal for setting your whole face.
• Pressed powder: powder pressed into a compact, perfect for touch-ups on the go.

Which face powder suits your skin?

If you have oily or combination skin, choose a mattifying powder with a matte finish; it keeps shine at bay the longest. If your skin is dry, go for a light, finely milled formula with a natural finish, so dry patches don't stand out even more. Want to add some light to your skin instead? A powder with a glow finish gives a radiant effect without looking shiny. If you have fair skin and need little colour correction, translucent is the safest choice; for medium to deep skin, a banana powder or a tinted powder prevents a grey cast in photos.

How do you apply makeup powder?

Let your foundation and concealer set for a moment first. Pick up a small amount of powder on a large, soft brush, tap off the excess and apply it in circular motions, starting on your T-zone. Want extra staying power? Press the powder into your skin with a powder puff. For baking, dab a generous layer under your eyes and along your nose, leave it on for five to ten minutes and sweep away the rest with a fluffy brush. Touching up during the day? Only dab the areas that are shiny, so your makeup doesn't start to look heavy.
