Oil Cleansers

An oil cleanser, or cleansing oil, dissolves make-up, sunscreen and excess sebum on the principle that ‘oil dissolves oil’. As soon as you add water, the oil emulsifies into a milky liquid that rinses off easily. Your skin feels clean afterwards, but not stripped. A cleansing oil works well on oily skin too: it helps loosen hardened sebum in the pores.

Oil cleansers: make-up and SPF gone with ease

Popular cleansing oils

  • Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil: lightweight texture, targeting pores and blackheads.
  • Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Cleansing Oil: nourishing, lovely for dry skin.
  • SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil: gentle, for sensitive skin.
  • Kose Softymo Speedy Cleansing Oil: a Japanese classic that quickly dissolves waterproof make-up.

How to use an oil cleanser

Apply the oil to dry skin with dry hands and massage gently, including over your mascara. Then wet your hands and keep massaging until the oil turns white, and rinse thoroughly. Follow with a water cleanser as the second step. Prefer a firmer texture? A balm cleanser does the same job. Sets such as the Heartleaf Double Cleansing Set by Anua are a handy way to start; you’ll find more sets under skincare routines and sets.
